The paper said that on Tuesday many people were at Littlehampton due to the sunny day and 9th Sussex Volunteers parade. A shoemaker and his wife were drinking at the Victory with a soldier. They left to cross the common to the shoemaker’s home when the shoemaker and soldier lay down to sleep. The wife went home. She returned to the common in the early morning [2 O’clock] and found her husband dead. The soldier was arrested and confined in Arundel Town Hall. The papers says that the soldier was Owen Bowley (Burley), an Irishman, of the 4th Foot then stationed in Littlehampton.
